Can You Hear Me Now?

“Give ear to my prayer, O God;
do not hide yourself from my supplication.
Attend to me, and answer me; I am troubled in my complaint.”

--An ancient Hebrew song (Psalm 55:1, 2)

NOTE: The series of commercials “Can You Hear Me Now?” developed by Verizon Wireless was quite memorable. This week we dare to explore that question as we look at another wireless connection.

Today’s opening verses sound like the writer isn’t quite sure if God is paying attention. Truly life is filled with many moments like this. If you listen to some of the ways we talk in our religious circles, it sounds like God is always paying attention and doing exactly what we hope God will do. I encounter a number of people who feel like the person who penned the opening words to Psalm 55. The following prayer expresses what my heart desires and what I pray regularly. Sometimes when I offer this prayer I’m tempted to be the Verizon wireless guy asking, “Can You Hear Me Now?”

God,
Lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth.
Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
I pray for peace to fill my heart, this world and our universe.
I pray that we might dream together,
pray together and work together,
Building one world filled with peace and justice for all. Amen.

Can You Hear Me Now?

“To you, O Lord, I call;
my rock, do not refuse to hear me,
for if you are silent to me,
I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.”

--An ancient Hebrew song (Psalm 28:1)

NOTE: The series of commercials “Can You Hear Me Now?” developed by Verizon Wireless was quite memorable. This week we dare to explore that question as we look at another wireless connection.

Today is going to be a challenging day for this chaplain. A support group for persons trying to emerge after significant deaths in their lives; two counseling sessions with people going through dark times in their lives; visitation requests as per the normal day; and ending with a support group for folks whose world has been forever changed because of suicide. There is a lot on the schedule today and it all looks pretty tough. My insides seem to echo the writer of the old Hebrew psalm. Here is my prayer:

Holy God,
I know you are strong and willing to grant me strength for my day.
Help me to feel your presence and trust that presence
I really do believe for I have felt your amazing grace
Since you already know about the challenges of my day,
forgive me for checking but,
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
Trusting.
Amen.

Toward A New Dawn

Friends:
I find this prayer by Jennie Butler to be filled with insight as a new year begins. Enjoy meditating with these strong images today.

“Infinite Spirit, when I pray each day for shelter for the homeless,
let me not ignore the pet without a home;

“As I ask for protection for those in areas of turmoil and unrest,
let me not forget endangered species of life;

“When I pray that the hungry be fed,
let me be mindful that all God’s creatures have need of sustenance;

“As I ask Divine assistance for those afflicted by fire,
flood, earthquake, storm or drought,
let me remember that this includes every living thing;

“In seeking miracle cures for human disease,
may I also speak for the well being of the planet itself.

“Let the words of my mouth, the meditations of my heart
and the actions of my life be as one,
that I may live each day in harmony with Mother Earth.
Amen.”

A New Year Begins

Creator of all that was, is and what is yet to be,
Holy Presence that knows about our chaos and conflict,
Instill within people a spirit of peace and a desire for understanding.

A Brief Prayer

As we begin this week, a brief healing prayer from Bhagavad Gita:

“Fear not. What is not real never was and never will be.
What is real always was and cannot be destroyed.”

Prayers from Various Traditions

Tuesday: A prayer for Divine Light to shine on creation.

O God, I pray for
The Body of the Earth, which is our rock and breath;
The Body of the Self, which is the shining eternal strand of the soul;
The Body of Material Substance, which is the ancient gentle temple of the spirit.

Move your divine hand across us in each of these planes,
Allow the earth of our bodies and the ether of our souls
To become fit grand vessels for your and our own illustrious light.

Have a good day. May the light of God radiate through you.

The Meaning of Life

Good morning God,
It is good to believe that you know more about me than I know about myself. Today I am feeling like I don’t practice being sensitive to your voice; like I don’t take enough time to see the connection between this moment and the vast continuum of time; like I’m so caught up in my stuff that I may be missing You in the midst of life’s rhythmic pace.

Yet, there is reason why I am numb and uncertain — that’s right you already know about it don’t you.

God, I’m not sure that I can be what I feel you nudging me to be and to become. Help me to seek you and to find you in the moment, in each and every moment. Help my words and my deeds to be in concert with the spirit that is beyond my petty desires.

It isn’t that I want to or need to do anything great to find meaning in my life, God. It is just that I’m still trying to find balance in my journey toward your realm. I’ll be still now — that is probably all you wanted me to do when I began this prayer. In your name, I pray. Amen.

A New Week Begins

English novelist Jane Austen died almost 200 years ago. I feel her prayer is helpful as each of us begins the tasks related to a new week:

“Incline us, O God,
To think humbly of ourselves,
To be saved only in the examination of our own conduct,
To consider our fellow-creatures with kindness,
And to judge all they say and do with the charity
which we would desire from them ourselves!”

May this week be even better than last week!

Prayers for Healing

“Trust in God at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.”

--A call to faith, Psalm 62:8

This week I want to share with you several prayers for healing. Today’s centering prayer is from Persia and focuses on inner (spiritual) healing.

“All that we ought to have thought and have not thought,
All that we ought to have said, and have not said,
All that we ought to have done, and have not done;

“All that we ought not to have thought, and yet have thought,
All that we ought not to have spoken, and yet have spoken,
All that we ought not to have done, and yet have done;

"For thoughts, words and works, pray we, O God, for forgiveness.”

May your week be blessed with the thoughts, the words and the deeds that come from souls forgiven and empowered to do that which needs to be done.

A prayer: God, be in all that I do. Amen.

Daily Devotion

This week: “Prayers of a Struggling Journeyer.”

Wow! This is it for my work week?
Thank you for putting up with all my stuff, God.
Thank you for teaching me the lessons I needed to learn.

I’ve been caught by many surprises this week:
I’ve laughed in moments of happiness and I’ve cried
in times of sadness!
I’ve held my breath in tense times and I’ve lost my breath
in sheer delight.

God, I do believe, help my unbelief.
Yes, I do believe in the rising and setting sun
Yes, I do believe in the order of creation
And I do believe in life, the life you’ve given me.

Thanks for a good week.
Is it OK to hope for a glorious weekend?

Daily Devotion

This week: “Prayers of a Struggling Journeyer.”

The weekend is coming, God.
I am feeling a bit bound-in, uptight and generally tense.
I can tell that fears are holding me back from being all that I can be.

Loosen me up enough that I can relax in your embrace.
Smooth those rough edges where anger and bitterness are cutting.
Free me up to be more open in giving and receiving
all that is out there –
All that is out there, especially designed for me by You.

Daily Devotion

This week: “Prayers of a Struggling Journeyer”

Here I am at the middle of the week, Lord.
Monday I was struggling big time.
Tuesday I was singing a song of happiness.
When will this up and down roller coaster ever level out?

What?
No………….
I’m not ready for that yet, Lord! ……
I don’t need it to be THAT level!

So help me to find enough calm on this up and down roller coaster.
I’d really like to experience a few more super dooper loopers!
Grant me the courage to accept the things that come my way today! Amen.

Daily Devotion

This week: “Prayers of a Struggling Journeyer.”

My Monday started out on a rather depressing note, O God.
Sorry about that!
Today, I seem to feel that fresh and beautiful things
are surging back!
Thank you.

I want to sing a song that is upbeat today!
I want to praise you for your steadiness
when I’ve not been so grateful.
I want today’s melodies to have a lilt to them.
I want to have feet that are dancing to the drumbeat of your love.

So, I give you my singing heart and look forward to your song.
Set my voice free to sing the beauty of your music living within me.

Daily Devotion

This week: “Prayers of a Struggling Journeyer”

Holy God,
I seem to be lost in a clouded fog of aimlessness.
I am having trouble feeling life.
I am searching for beauty.
I’m not too certain about faith and hope and love.

Search for me before I drift too far down the path
of loneliness and isolation.
Will you really stand by me in the darkness of this pit?
Will you support me as I travel this road filled with potholes?

Restore me with some remembrances of my better moments in life.
Instill me with a renewed measure of trust in you.
Stay with me, I pray. Amen.

Note: Even if you are not where this struggling journeyer is;
please remember that many are.

Spirit Fireworks!

The rhythm of another week begins. Freedom’s songs will be sung and played today. They will continue to be heard as long as we continue to give attention to the tasks of liberty that our ancestors envisioned. Tonight we’ll gaze at fireworks exploding before our eyes and behold their awesome grandeur. Today provides an opportunity to look inward and allow the fireworks of spirit renewal to create an inner beauty that rivals the magnificence of that which we will see tonight. To help us in achieving this, I share with you this prayer of Caitlin Matthews, found in a prayer book on my shelf, Prayers for Healing.

“From the depths of holy silence,
I give thanks for the joy and energy of life.
May all beings enjoy the vitality of their existence.

“I remember all that suffer great pain and long-term illness,
especially (add names).
May the Healer of Hurts breathe balm and restoration into all wounded lives.

“May all negative, angry and harmful attitudes,
especially my (add what you need to)
that I harbor within me be transformed into new available life.

“The dance of a summer day calls my steps:
May I respond to the rhythm and melody of its music.”

Prayer from Mother Teresa

“A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink
and find great satisfaction in their work.
This too, I see, is from the hand of God
for without him, who can find enjoyment.”

--A wisdom saying Ecclesiastes
Chapter 2:24, 25

One of the daily prayers that Mother Teresa used as she delivered her care to children in India seems most appropriate for the work we do in this hospital.

“Dearest Lord, may I see you today and every day
in the person of your sick, and,
while nursing them, minister unto you.
though you hide yourself behind the unattractive disguise
of the irritable, the exacting and the unreasonable,
may I be still long enough to recognize you in them….

“Sweetest Lord, make me appreciative of the dignity
of my vocation and its many responsibilities.
Never permit me to disgrace it by giving way
to coldness, unkindness, or impatience….

“Lord, increase my faith,
bless my efforts and work,
now and forevermore.
Amen.”

Already Thursday

Good morning God.
The week is traveling too quickly!
I admit that I have gotten pretty busy, pretty harried,
pretty preoccupied with the details of an unraveling week.
Slow me down enough that I can feel
the wind of your renewing Spirit.

There are times when I wish everything could slow down.
Perhaps it could help me on my troubled Thursdays.
Perhaps I could be more aware on my twisted Thursdays.
Perhaps …

What I do know is this:
It is already Thursday and I need your Divine touch.
Thank you.

Heartsong of the Soul

Holy God,
As I begin another day grant me sensitivity
To the beat of my heart
To the pulse of my spirit
To the words that are spoken
To the silent words of Spirit presence

As I begin another day grant me courage
To rise above the noise of chaos and hear your voice
To look beyond the clutter of cosmos and see your realm
To feed not so much on food for body, but on the fruit of your Spirit
To feel, amid warfare and confusion, the calm of inner peace

As I begin another day grant me wisdom
To be silent, allowing the sojourner to hear their heartsong
To be sensitive, empowering the sojourner to follow their heartsong
To be compassionate, embracing the sojourner when hearing and following must wait
To be alive with Your radiance which empowers Your creation minute by minute.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

This week has seen its times of struggle, times of routine, and times of celebration — to name a few of the rhythms that each of us regularly experience. Through it all the providential care of God has been present. As I listen and reflect on my life this week, I find my Friday meditation calling me to thanksgiving. A brief prayer for today:

Holy God,
All that has come to me this week has been your gift to me.
Your faithfulness has been unending, your care has been unfailing,
Your strength for each moment has been unequaled.
Thank you.
The mystery of your life within is precious
The mystery of your infinite goodness is beyond comprehension.
Thank you for mystery.
The unfolding rhythm of this new season is filled with color and fragrance.
The new season brings new challenges (like allergies).
The new season brings deepened trust in the constancy of your deep love.
Thank you for the new season.
Great and mighty God, receive this prayer of thanks today. Amen.

Hope your weekend is wonderful!

Little Prayers

As we move toward the beauty of spring, we focus on little prayers that can help our souls dance with praise to God. We close this week of devotions with one verse from the Chinook Song Book.

“O Lord,
May we today be touched by grace, fascinated and
Moved by this, your creation,
Energized by the power of new growth at work in your world.

“May we move beyond viewing this life not only through a frame, but
Touch it and be touched by it,
Know it and be known by it,
Love it and be loved by it.”

May spring come to us, be in us, and recreate life in us. Amen.”

Enjoy your weekend!
